How to Make Turkish Coffee: Traditional Recipe and Step-by-Step Guide

16-03-2026

Turkish coffee is one of the oldest and most distinctive coffee traditions in the world. Known for its rich flavor, thick foam, and unique preparation method, traditional Turkish coffee has been an important part of daily life in Turkey for centuries.

Unlike many other brewing methods, Turkish coffee is prepared slowly in a small pot called a cezve, allowing the coffee to develop a deep aroma and velvety texture.

If you want to experience authentic Turkish coffee at home, here is a simple step-by-step guide to making Turkish coffee the traditional way.

What Makes Turkish Coffee Unique?

Turkish coffee is different from other coffee styles because the beans are ground extremely fine—almost like powder—and brewed unfiltered.

This allows the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom of the cup, creating the thick texture and strong flavor that Turkish coffee is famous for.

It is traditionally served in small cups and often accompanied by a glass of water and sometimes a piece of Turkish delight.

Ingredients for Traditional Turkish Coffee

To prepare authentic Turkish coffee, you only need a few simple ingredients.

Ingredients

-1 cup cold water

-1–2 teaspoons finely ground Turkish coffee

-Sugar (optional)

Turkish coffee can be served in several sweetness levels:

-Sade – no sugar

-Az sekerli – slightly sweet

-Orta – medium sweet

-Sekerli – sweet

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Turkish Coffee

Step 1 – Add Water to the Cezve

Start by pouring one cup of cold water into a cezve (traditional Turkish coffee pot). Using cold water helps create a richer foam during the brewing process.

Step 2 – Add Coffee and Sugar

Add 1–2 teaspoons of finely ground Turkish coffee to the water.

If you prefer sweet coffee, add sugar at this stage before brewing.

Do not stir after the brewing process begins.

Step 3 – Stir Before Heating

Gently stir the mixture until the coffee and sugar dissolve in the water.

This ensures an even flavor and helps the foam form properly.

Step 4 – Heat Slowly

Place the cezve over low heat and allow the coffee to heat slowly.

As the coffee warms, a thick foam will begin to form on the surface. This foam is an important part of traditional Turkish coffee.

Step 5 – Pour the Foam

Just before the coffee begins to boil, carefully spoon some of the foam into each coffee cup.

Then return the cezve briefly to the heat until the coffee rises again.

Step 6 – Serve the Coffee

Pour the coffee slowly into the cups, allowing the remaining foam to settle on top.

Turkish coffee is served without filtering, so the grounds will remain at the bottom of the cup.

How to Drink Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee is meant to be enjoyed slowly. After pouring, allow the coffee grounds to settle for a minute before drinking.

Traditionally, it is served with:

-A glass of water

-Turkish delight or another small sweet

The water helps cleanse the palate before drinking the coffee.

The Tradition of Turkish Coffee Fortune Telling

One of the most famous traditions connected to Turkish coffee is coffee fortune telling, known as kahve falı.

After finishing the coffee, the cup is turned upside down on the saucer and allowed to cool. The shapes formed by the coffee grounds inside the cup are then interpreted as symbols representing possible future events.

Although it is mostly a fun and social activity, this tradition remains a beloved part of Turkish coffee culture.

Experience Turkish Coffee in Turkey

While making Turkish coffee at home is a wonderful experience, enjoying it in Turkey offers a completely different atmosphere.

Across the country, from historic cafés in Istanbul to small village tea houses, Turkish coffee continues to bring people together through conversation, hospitality, and tradition.
