Dark Canyon is not a destination filled with large resorts or crowds of
international visitors.
And that's part of its appeal.
The landscape is raw and dramatic, with steep rock walls surrounding the
Euphrates and roads following seemingly impossible routes through the
mountains.
One of the best ways to appreciate the scale of the canyon is from the
water. Boat trips travel between the cliffs, offering a completely different

The Legendary Kemaliye Stone Road
Perhaps the most fascinating part of the journey is the Kemaliye Stone
Road — Tas Yolu.
Construction of the road began in the 19th century, and generations of
local people worked to create a passage through the mountains. Today, its
tunnels and cliffside sections make the road almost as famous as the canyon
itself.
But among adventure motorcyclists, the Stone Road has developed another
reputation.
A Pilgrimage Road for Motorcyclists
For some Turkish motorcycle riders, reaching Kemaliye and completing the
Stone Road has become something of a rite of passage.
Motorcyclists sometimes jokingly describe riders who complete the route as
becoming a “hacı” — a pilgrim — reflecting the almost legendary status
the journey has developed within parts of the riding community.
It isn't difficult to understand why.
Narrow tunnels cut through solid rock, the Euphrates appears far below, and
around the next corner another enormous canyon wall fills your view.
The road itself becomes part of the destination.

traveled the Stone Road ourselves, and Kemaliye is one of those places where
the journey matters as much as the destination. The tunnels, canyon walls and
views over the Euphrates create an experience very different from Turkey's
classic tourist routes.
The road can also be challenging, however. Its narrow sections, tunnels and
mountainous terrain mean it should be approached according to current
conditions and with appropriate experience rather than simply as another scenic
drive.
Is Kemaliye Worth Visiting?
If this is your first short trip to Turkey, destinations such as Istanbul,
Cappadocia and Ephesus will naturally remain priorities.
But if you are returning to Turkey, exploring Eastern Anatolia, traveling
by motorcycle, or simply searching for places beyond the familiar routes, Kemaliye
deserves attention.
It represents exactly what makes exploring Turkey beyond its famous
destinations so rewarding.
Sometimes the most memorable places are the ones you weren't originally
planning to visit.
